The fire took place around 10:25 a.m., Monday, Sept. 9, at 450 Ferry Blvd., in Stratford, said Deputy Chief and Fire Marshal Brian Lampart.
When firefighters arrived on the scene they found residents were self-evacuating from the 25-unit building, Lampart said.
The tenant of the damaged apartment was treated on scene and transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation type treatment, he added.
The fire was located in a one-bedroom apartment on the third floor where firefighters found extensive smoke and heat damage, Lampart said.
Stratford Fire responded with five engine companies, one ladder company, and an assistant chief.
The City of Bridgeport and Milford fire departments also sent engine companies to assist with station coverage during this incident.
The fire was investigated by the Stratford Fire Marshal’s Office and was determined to be accidental due to a failed extension type cord being used to power an air conditioner.
